Westborough Middle School (WMS) is a standout winner in the San Mateo County Office of Education's (SMCOE) Sustainable and Climate Resilient Schools Challenge.

The contest recognizes students, teachers, administrators, and community members who are helping to create a sustainable future and making an impact in their schools or community .

According to WMS science teacher Corinna Low, the school's Planeteers Club has been working on projects to zero out the school's waste.

These projects include setting up a share table during lunchtime, helping students sort waste correctly into the school's recycling and composting bins, reducing the use of single-use plastics at school, and organizing cooking competitions to "upcycle" food that was headed to the compost bin.

"The Planeteers are passionate about doing whatever they can to be part of the solution to climate change," said Low.

She said members of the club have also organized youth climate protests after school and put up posters to raise environmental awareness.

"The Planeteers will continue their work with community partners like the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability, Environmental Health Services, South San Francisco Scavenger, and SMCOE’s Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative to keep students involved in school and community sustainability efforts," said Low.
